FOOD REVIEW: Atomic Ale Brewpub & Eatery
Not just great beer - the food is amazing, too!
The Atomic Ale Brewpub & Eatery in Richland is nearly an institution in Richland for places to eat. If you haven’t been there yet (heaven forbid), you really need to get there soon. They offer some of the best pizza, sandwiches, soup, and other goodies you will find in the Tri-Cities.
Atomic Giant Soft Pretzel
Let’s start with their Atomic Giant Soft Pretzel. This is a homemade pretzel served with a homemade pesto sauce as well as a homemade beer mustard. It is served warm and soft as is a great way to kick off any meal without worrying about getting stuffed.
Atomic Ale’s Red Potato Soup
I don’t say this lightly, but Atomic’s Red Potato Soup is legendary. You could be sitting there with a friend talking about a great meal you’ve recently had and it will probably spark the memory of some delicious soup one of you has had and then you will probably say, “but have you had Atomic Ale’s Red Potato Soup?”, and your eyes will glaze over and say “mmmmmmm” Red Potato Soup. I don’t know how they do it, but they take such a simple dish and make it heavenly. I don’t know how else to describe it.
We’ve all had dinner rolls. Most times when dinner rolls are served at a meal, they are an after thought. They’re just something to be served with dinner because that’s what you do; you serve dinner rolls with dinner. Similarly to Atomic’s Red Potato Soup, they take something so simple and turn it into something heavenly. This particular combination of butter, garlic, and bread is something you will not find anywhere else in the Tri-Cities. If you are going to Atomic for a quick meal of soup and salad, you need to get some of these rolls. You just have to.
Chicken Pesto Sandwich
There are a lot of places in the Tri-Cities that serve sandwiches, but there are only a handful of places that do sandwiches well. Atomic’s Chicken Pesto Sandwich is a great sandwich. There is one thing I would recommend when ordering it though, make sure they throw on just a tad bit more pesto on it. The pesto really, really adds to the sandwich.
If you’re looking for something a little substantial but aren’t quite in the mood for pizza, Atomic has a few entrees on their menu that are worth trying. Tonight, we went with their Pork Capicola. They put together a couple of pork tenderloins covered with capicola ham, smoked provolone, and some homemade lemon chardonnay garlic cream sauce. It is delicious.
Reactor Core Pizza
Normally, I am pretty set in my ways when ordering pizza. I’m either a straight up one topping, pepperoni pizza type of guy or if I want to change things up, I’ll get something equivalent to a “meat eaters” or “meat lovers” type pizza. This time, we went with a specialty pizza. The first one was their Reactor Core pizza. This pie is covered with their mozzarella, Genoa salami, sausage, jalapenos, red onions, mushrooms, blue cheese crumbles, and some crushed red peppers.
I really enjoyed the combination of flavors. Usually I find pizza with this many ingredients a little too busy, but all of these flavors really worked. I really enjoyed the jalapenos. They really made the pizza.
Black & Blue Pizza
During this visit, we also ordered another pizza. This one was their Black & Blue Pizza. This one was made a creamy blue cheese sauce, mozzarella, seasoned and blackened chicken, pepperoni, black olives, and green onions. They also throw on a little extra blue cheese crumbles on top just for a little extra love.
I usually don’t do chicken pizzas, but this is one I would definitely order again. It’s that good.
Atomic’s Four Kings pizza is their variation of a typical meat lovers pizza. It comes with their delicious red sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, sausage, bratwurst, and Canadian bacon. If you are jonesing for a pizza with all your favorite meats on it, then the Four Kings is going to be the one for you. I’ve had this one a number of times and it has never disappointed.
Plutonium Porter Chocolate Containment Cake
If you have a sweet tooth and are craving chocolate, then the Plutonium Porter Chocolate Containment cake is exactly what the doctor has ordered. This is a very rich, very chocolaty dessert that will cure any cravings within a few bites. When you order it, bring a friend or two who can help you.
Ok, since having Atomic’s Blackberry Cobbler, I’ve been talking about it a lot. When it was delivered to the table, I tried to only have a couple of bites but I kept finding myself needing another and then another spoonful. The bottom line about this cobbler is that it is truly addicting. I’m not too much of a dessert person (or at least I keep telling myself) but I would order this cobbler over and over again.
Here’s the bottom line. The Tri-Cities has a lot of restaurants and only a handful or two of places that take the time to make many of their ingredients in house. Atomic Ale & Brewpub is one of those places that takes the time and energy to make many of their ingredients and it really shows in their end product. Their food is delicious. Their staff is very courteous and friendly. If you haven’t been to Atomic in a while, be sure to get there soon before they do any changing to their menu.
